In an act born of anger and defiance, Eagle becomes Autumn’s unexpected savior, forcing these two solitary people into each other’s broken worlds. Neither knows quite what to make of the other, but one thing is certain. To survive Purgatory, they must learn how to rely on each other, a feat that could possibly teach them both how to live again.

Riley and Sheehan wrote another fantastic book together, and it's magic!
While this novel could be read as a standalone, I recommend reading Thicker Than Blood first because that's where we first meet Eagle.
Beneath Blood and Bone revolves around Eagle and a newcomer, Autumn. We watch as Eagle transforms from a character we love to hate to a man we want - no, need - to see redeemed. His story is tragic and heartbreaking. There's a reason he's so incredibly angry with everyone, including himself, and the entire world. I love how Riley and Sheehan take us through his redemption and reveal his vulnerabilities a sliver at a time. It breaks my heart and makes me feel empathy for him, a man I truly despised and feared in Thicker Than Blood. How they did that is magic, pure and simple.
Autumn is damaged, a fragment of her former self. Yet, she is strong. She just has to realize it. Autumn needs Eagle, and Eagle - though he won't admit it - needs Autumn.
Beneath Blood and Bone left me hopeful, but at the same time, absolutely terrified. I, too, want to see Purgatory burn because "the Vaal fever might have killed our fellow man, but it was we who had destroyed ourselves."
Riley and Sheehan are a strong writing team, a force to be reckoned with. I can't wait to see what they have in store in Book 3, There Will Be Blood.
