Title: Lumière (The Illumination Paradox #1)
Author: Jacqueline Garlick
Published: December 12, 2013
There is something so inviting about Lumière's cover art. It drew me into its fantastical world.
The opening scene sets the scene for the entire book. Eyelet is eight-years-old and beside herself with excitement over a mechanical steam-powered elephant at a carnival.
Garlick's characters are so charming that is impossible not to cheer for them. While Eyelet got on my nerves at times with her immaturity and seemingly ungratefulness, I found Urlick to be my favorite character. He is adorable in his own way, and I adore that he is an atypical Prince Charming. Though "disfigured" he is witty and kind-hearted.
I enjoyed the blend of fantasy and adventure with steampunk. But I felt that the pace was slow in some areas. I didn't fall head over heels in love with Lumière, but I think the series has great potential as a steampunk adventure, so I plan to read the next book when it is released.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
About the Author
My writing style has been described as edgy and rule-breaking, and by some--a touch Tim Burton-esque. Because of this, I am often referred to as the Quentin Tarantino of YA among writing friends.
In my former life, I was a teacher (both grade school and college-don't ask), but more recently I've been a graduate of Ellen Hopkin's Nevada Mentor Program and a student of James Scott Bell, Christopher Vogler and Don Maass. An excerpt from Lumière earned me the 2012 Don Maass Break Out Novel Intensive Scholarship.
Lumière--A Romantic Steampunk Fantasy--my debut novel, is the recipient of an indieBRAG Medallion!!! B.R.A.G. Medallion Honoree October 15, 2014) I am so proud! (LUMIERE by Jacqueline E.
