Because Lincoln and his ministry might be just as dangerous as the madman they’re hunting.

First, let me say how gorgeous this cover is. I love everything about it. So, between the cover that demanded my attention and the interesting description, this went on my TBR list immediately.
I finished this book in a couple of days, with the last 75% in one reading. I decided to read for a few minutes before bed, and ended up reading half the night. Who needs sleep anyway? I found that I couldn't put the book down. I was intrigued, and, apparently, incapable of using a bookmark. The world in which Archer placed her characters is amazingly detailed. I found myself easily imagining the dirty, smelly gangs of boys who live in the London slums just as easily as the handsome carriages and regal lords who visit the grand Lichfield Towers. Charlie (Charlotte), a girl--well, a woman now--who has been living as a boy on the streets, doesn't know how to act female. I find her fascinating. I love her strong will and stubbornness and her strength to do what it takes to stay alive in a cruel world. She's not physically strong, but she didn't need physical strength to stay alive. Her wit and street smarts help her do that. What I love most is her relationship with Seth and Gus, who reside in Lichfield Towers. It was unsteady at first because of the way she came to Lichfield, but seems to be growing into something like sibling affection. And, without a family to love her, that's exactly what Charlie needs in her life. I continue to be confused by Charlie's relationship with Lincoln Fitzroy (call him Mr. Fitzroy or sir). Though there seems to be a growing affection between them, his cold nature seems to be a towering wall between them, preventing them from getting to know one another. I'm curious to see where their relationship--if there is one--goes in Book 2. My absolute favorite moment, though, was when the identity of the evil V.F. was revealed. This was my a-ha moment! I can honestly say that I wasn't expecting this supernatural story to contain a particular classic character. No spoilers from me though; you will just have to read it for yourself. Overall, I was delighted to read this engaging story. I think most fans of the supernatural would enjoy it as well. Rating: 5/5 About the Author
