You Only Get One Shot was intriguing and cleverly written, with a collection of four short horror stories woven into a larger, deranged tale, tying them together.
Four authors receive an email from an anonymous source demanding that they write and post a horror story with a hard and fast deadline. Ignoring her email or contacting the police will result in death. The author whom she deems the winner will be allowed to live. So, we get four short horror stories within another horror story. It's a unique setup for four unrelated short horror stories, and well executed.
I have a favorite, but I'm not the judge, jury, or executioner.
Also nestled in this deranged tale are introductions to each of the four fiction authors. Real authors Kevin J. Kennedy and J.C. Michael used this limited space to create three-dimensional characters, and I felt like I had a handle on who they were.
The nod to the Resident Evil franchise by referencing Umbrella in Rezerection gave me a chuckle, and the spelling of the story title hinted at what was to come. Very clever.
This is a fast-paced and entertaining read.
